No Money No Problems? Not so sure. The world's five richest rappers all exceed US$100 million in personal wealth. And that doesn't stop them from releasing hit songs, far from it.
1) JAY-Z, $1 BILLION
Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, is the first billionaire rapper. He far surpasses the other members of this list.
It must be said that he is much more than a rapper. After releasing three of Rolling Stone's Top 500 albums of all time, the Brooklyn native quickly turned to business.
Record label, clothing brand, champagne house, Carter is even an athletic agent for NBA big names like Kevin Durant, in the top 10 richest athletes in 2019.
2) DR. DRE, $800 MILLION
Dr Dre is considered one of the world's leading rap producers. He has produced, among others, Tupac, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar. In 2018, his revenues were $35 million.
Although he calls himself a billionaire, the former NWA member has not yet passed this symbolic milestone.
He has come considerably closer to it after raising $500 million by selling his Beats audio equipment business to Apple in 2014.
3) DIDDY, $740 MILLION
Diddy may be the only one on this list who was a businessman before he was a rapper. "I started my career at the age of 12, delivering newspapers," he told Forbes magazine.
In 37 years, he's made a few hundred million dollars, while releasing an album that went seven times platinum.
In addition to being the producer of rap legend Biggie, Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez, Diddy is also a major shareholder in the vodka brand Cîroc, which promises him a growing cash flow in the coming years.
4) KANYE WEST, 240 MILLIONS $
Although Kanye has already declared himself $53 million in debt and has asked Mark Zuckerberg for $1 billion to finance future content, he doesn't seem so much to complain about.
Indeed, he recently signed with Adidas for its Yeezy shoe brand. The value of the brand is likely to increase in the coming years and West could join Jay-Z as a billionaire rapper.
5) DRAKE, 150 MILLIONS $
The last one on this list is none other than Drake. At 32, the Toronto native is the youngest member of this popular group.
But he's growing fast, with his wealth having increased by half since last year. At this rate, he'll be catching up quickly. In the meantime, he can continue to endure the Raptors with peace of mind.
In addition to his artistic activity, the Canadian rapper is active in real estate and the whisky industry.
